A
view from Conner's Way. The trail is an asphalt jogging trail
that follows the contours of Dobbins' rolling hills between
the Consolidated Club and Base Exchange on Atlantic Blvd. The
trail also provides a crossover to an oval running track as
well as one to the Dobbins POW/MIA Memorial Park.
Spearheaded
by Ron Durant, a Safety Office employee and a long-time friend
of Doug Conner, the trail was dedicated on June 5, 2008. The
trail was built by members of the 94th Civil Engineer Squadron,
who also built the park. A number of base organizations and
community groups provided funding for the seating area and monument.
The
top two photos show the park in the background. The
lower photo shows the seating area and monument that adjoins
the trail.
The
following text appears on the plaque:
CONNER’S
WAY
Providing
a safe walking and jogging trail was a long-time goal for Charles
“Doug” Conner. A quiet and reserved safety professional,
Doug provided safety leadership and strived to bring a better
quality of life and safety in everything he did for Dobbins
Air Reserve Base and its people. His vision of a safe walkway
came to pass after his retirement, and his untimely death.
Doug
began his Air Force career in 1955 as an active-duty enlisted
member and became a safety professional in 1966. He retired
from active duty in 1981 with 26 years of service in the Air
Force, but continued his safety career as a civil servant which
ended on September 3, 2003, with 48 years of watching over and
protecting our Airmen.
The
Conner’s Way trail was dedicated on June 5, 2008, with
Doug’s family and friends in attendance. The trail’s
name commemorates Doug for his tireless efforts in promoting
and supporting safety programs, his leadership in the safety
field throughout the Air Force, and his service to our country.
